I so enjoy this hobby that when I find someone with the slightest interest, I have to resist the temptation to go into far too much detail and - as you perfectly framed it - evangelize rather than advise. I recently read an interview with a Fujifilm executive who was asked whether the quality of today's smartphone cameras is so high that it threatens the sales of dedicated cameras, and was surprised by his response. He said it was quite the opposite, suggesting that a smartphone camera is often the gateway to more serious photography. While it will always be "good enough" for many, there are also enough people who will quickly reach the limits of what a smartphone camera can do and will be inspired to explore a dedicated camera.
