There's no doubt Nikon wants to ride the retro wave, and I can't blame them for that. Between Fujifilm and Nikon's own classic film cameras, there's plenty of inspiration.
As to "Why a Zf and not an X-T," I think you could also ask the question, "Why a Zf and not a Z6 II or a Z8?".
In the end, the conclusion I came to is that the Zf isn't a logical buy; it's not a "left-brain" decision. There isn't one single thing it does significantly better than any other camera. It doesn't even do a bunch of things a little bit better than any other camera. It is truly unique, and to be at peace with it, I think you have to be comfortable letting the right half of your brain win you over :-)
